Types of Fences Woodlyn, PA

In the quaint community of Woodlyn, Pennsylvania, where homes are often graced with wooden fences and decks that add charm and privacy, homeowners understand the importance of proper installation techniques to ensure longevity. One critical aspect of erecting wooden posts—whether for a fence or a deck—is ensuring adequate drainage at their base to prevent water damage and rot. Gravel serves as an excellent material for facilitating this necessary drainage.

Gravel's versatility and permeability make it an ideal choice for creating a well-draining environment around the buried portion of wooden posts. Unlike soil, which can retain moisture against the wood, gravel allows water to flow freely away from the post. This is crucial because standing moisture can be a death sentence for wood structures; it invites decay and unwanted pests such as termites that thrive in damp conditions.

The process begins by digging a hole slightly wider than the post itself; this extra space is reserved for your gravel backfill. After setting the post in place, homeowners meticulously shovel a generous layer of gravel into this gap. This creates a buffer zone that separates the wood from potential moisture seepage.

It's important to choose the appropriate type of gravel for this application—a mixture that is too fine may hinder water movement, while stones that are too large could cause instability. Typically, crushed stone with varied sizes works best as it compacts well while still allowing water to pass through efficiently.

Installation should be done carefully; it’s not enough just to pour gravel haphazardly at the post's base. The gravel must be compacted around each pole systematically to provide sturdy support while maintaining good drainage properties.

Moreover, considering Woodlyn's climate with its seasonal rainfall patterns, preventive measures like using gravel become even more paramount. It's an investment in fence durability that pays dividends over time by averting premature repair costs due to rot or insect infestation.

As residents take pride in their homes' appearances and structural integrity, incorporating smart practices like utilizing gravel drainage systems becomes part of Woodlyn’s collective wisdom—a testament to their commitment to preserving both beauty and function within their charming Pennsylvania town’s landscape.

Angi provided me with several contractors, I received estimates but chose Philz Landscaping (even after coming in higher) because he satisfied with his estimate and start date our fervent desire to complete the project before winter set in. Alex, Javier set the example of professionalism in setting up the area to remove fencing and gate, installed vinyl fence with double gate (assisted by Carlos), removed all debris, left my yard spotless and we are extremely satisfied with the new fence and gate. Questions we had were answered (Helena, Phil) promptly and Alex, Javier went above and beyond ensuring my wife’s concerns were taken care of; I want again to Thank the team at Philz Landscaping and recommend highly to perform your project.

Had Phil and his workers come by my house to work on the backyard in May this year. Eliminate weeds, regrade soil and replant grass seed. 158 feet worth of backyard which he estimated $1600 to do. There was a hiccup with his office and scheduling and he wasn't even aware of the set date in mid-May. He rescheduled for the week after and took off $100 for inconvenience. His crew shows up and does the job and weeks after, grass grew....but not fully in corners of the yard. I called him back, voicemail immediately. Got in touch with his office and they said they would pass the message. His response times are atrocious and I told him about the patches in the grass. He says "no problem I'll send guys to evaluate and re-seed". They show up and do the job again. By mid-July, weeds are growing in very strong and grass is dying at exceedingly high rate despite me watering. I called him back and he says "that's odd, I'll come by this afternoon or tomorrow" in September when I finally get a hold of him. He never shows up or responds to texts or further calls. The photos below are post-lawn work with visible patches and weeds. I had to spend additional monies on top soil, grass seed and water to correct the loss of 50% of the lawn!! If you want an overpriced job not done right, Phil is your guy!!

Philz Landscaping built 2 patios on my property. One is flagstone and the other is pavers with a retaining wall. Both are absolutely beautiful. Working with Phil and his team has been a great experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for reliability, quality, and reasonable pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crushed stone or coarse gravel with varying sizes of particles, typically around 3/4 inch, works well for drainage because it allows water to flow through easily and doesnt compact over time.
Use about 4-6 inches of gravel at the base of each post to ensure proper drainage and help prevent wood rot and post heaving due to freeze-thaw cycles.
Yes, tamping down the gravel helps to stabilize the post and provides a firm foundation while still allowing water to drain through.
While not always necessary, some people opt to use a landscape fabric or geotextile under the gravel layer to enhance filtration and prevent soil from mixing with the gravel. Additionally, using concrete along with gravel can offer even more stability for fence posts.
